The Phases of Nervous System Healing

When families first walk into our office, they’re often looking for answers.

Maybe a newborn is struggling with reflux or colic.Maybe a toddler isn’t sleeping well.Maybe mom is dealing with stress and exhaustion, or dad has lingering back pain that never fully goes away.

Whatever the reason, most families want the same thing: lasting health, not just temporary relief.

At Sunlife Chiropractic, we take a nervous-system-focused approach that supports healing in phases. Each phase is designed to help the body move from stress and dysfunction to regulation and long-term wellness.

Understanding these phases can help you know exactly what to expect when beginning care for yourself or your family.

Step 1: Your First Visits — Understanding the Root Cause

Every healing journey begins with understanding what’s actually going on inside the body.

During your first visits, our goal is to learn your story and gather the information needed to build a personalized care plan.

Your first visit typically includes:

Consultation

We start by discussing your or your child’s health history, symptoms, and goals. This helps us understand the root causes of your health challenges, not just the symptoms.

Nervous System Scans

Using advanced scanning technology, we measure how your nervous system is functioning and identify areas of stress and tension in the autonomic nervous system.

Chiropractic Exam and First Adjustment

You’ll receive your first gentle chiropractic adjustment to begin supporting the nervous system and restoring communication between the brain and body.

At your second visit, we review your scans together and present a custom care plan designed specifically for you or your child.

This plan becomes the roadmap for your family’s healing journey.

Phase 1: Restoration Care — Addressing the Root Cause

The first phase of care is called Restoration Care.

This phase focuses on correcting the underlying stress patterns that have built up in the nervous system over time.

Life is full of stressors that affect the body, including:

  • Stress during pregnancy

  • Birth interventions or birth trauma

  • Falls and injuries during childhood

  • Emotional stress

  • Poor posture or daily physical stress

  • Environmental and toxic exposures

All of these stressors can interfere with how the nervous system communicates with the rest of the body.

During Restoration Care, adjustments are typically more frequent, often two to three visits per week at the beginning. Over time, visits gradually decrease as the nervous system begins to regulate and adapt more effectively.

Care plans usually range from 24 to 60 visits over several months, depending on your goals and the level of stress in the nervous system.

What You May Notice During Restoration Care

As the nervous system becomes more regulated, many families notice improvements such as:

  • Better sleep

  • Improved digestion

  • More balanced moods in kids

  • Fewer headaches or tension

  • Increased energy

  • Stronger immune function

For children, this phase can mean:

  • Improved nursing or feeding

  • Better sleep patterns

  • Fewer ear infections

  • Reaching developmental milestones more easily

For pregnant moms, it may mean:

  • Less pain and discomfort

  • Improved pelvic balance

  • Better sleep and reduced stress

  • Smoother delivery

In this phase, symptoms often start to improve because the nervous system is becoming better equipped to handle everyday stress.

Phase 2: Wellness Care — Maintaining a Regulated Nervous System

Once your body has completed the restoration phase, you move into Wellness Care.

This phase focuses on maintaining the progress you’ve made and supporting your nervous system through life’s ongoing stressors, that let’s face it never go away.

Instead of frequent visits, adjustments usually happen weekly or biweekly through a wellness membership.

Think of this phase as maintaining your health rather than chasing symptoms.

Why Ongoing Care Matters

Life doesn’t stop being stressful once symptoms improve.

Children continue to grow and experience physical stress as they learn to crawl, walk, run, and play sports.

Parents juggle work, family responsibilities, emotional stress, and physical demands.

Even babies who started care after a challenging birth continue to benefit from ongoing nervous system support as their body grows and they reach new milestones.

For example:

A baby who initially comes in for birth-related tension may transition into a toddler who is sleeping better, hitting milestones on time, and thriving because their nervous system has been supported consistently.

Wellness care helps families maintain that progress and keep their nervous systems functioning optimally through life's ups and downs.

Care for the Whole Family

One of the most unique aspects of neurologically-focused chiropractic care is that it supports every stage of life.

At our office, it’s common to see the entire family receiving care together:

  • Pregnant moms preparing for birth

  • Newborns adjusting after birth

  • Toddlers learning to regulate their nervous systems

  • Kids navigating growth and development

  • Parents managing the demands of work and family life

Our goal is not just to treat symptoms but to help families build a strong foundation of nervous system health that lasts for generations.

Because when the nervous system functions well, the entire body has the ability to heal, adapt, and thrive. Plus a regulated Mom passes that on to her future children.

The Bigger Picture: A Regulated Nervous System

Health isn’t just about eliminating symptoms.

True health means your body can adapt to stress, recover quickly, and maintain balance.

Neurologically-focused chiropractic care helps restore proper communication between the brain and body by reducing tension and interference within the nervous system.

When this communication improves, the body can begin to function the way it was designed to.

Over time, families often notice improvements not just in symptoms, but in overall quality of life.

Better sleep.Better moods.More energy.Greater resilience to stress.
